About Us

The Church was established in the 1840’s by an elderly lady, with ministers and lay-preachers travelling to the district to hold gospel services in her home, which continued after her passing. One of the travelling ministers was a Methodist preacher named James Anderson, who eventually settled in Levenwick.

In 1884-1886, with the cottage needing repair, and attendances growing, the men of Levenwick built the present Mission Hall on the foundation of the lady’s cottage with permission from the local Laird, William Bruce of Symbister, a close friend of James Anderson.

The construction work was funded by community generosity together with support from William Stewart, who grew up in Levenwick and had become a successful wool merchant in Edinburgh.

The format for the Mission Hall Trust, and the regular church services have continued to the present day, providing a focal point for community worship. The hall also houses a memorial plaque in honour of the local men who gave their lives in the Great War.

The Levenwick Mission Hall is non-denominational, Bible-based and welcoming. It is solely funded by congregational offering, and is available to all in the community for Christian wedding and funeral services.
